Speculation of Britain's royal titles - Kristy

The United Kingdom Queen Elizabeth II grandson, Prince William is going to marry a commoner girl Kate Middleton in 29 April 2011. Before that, there has been much speculation about which titles would the Queen give Kate. This has become a hot topic in cities and towns of Britain.

Due to Prince William wants to remain his borned title as a Prince and not downgrade to a Duke, he therefore wants his fiancee Kate to be titled as Princess Catherine. However, this will cause dilemma to the Britain's monarch because the princess title is traditionally received through birth and not marriange. The problem is that Kate is not connected to the royal family in any way or in other words, she is just a commoner.

If Prince William is not given a new title, then Kate can only become Princess William and not Princess Catherine according to the Royal historian. Same like the prince's late mother, Princess of Wales is the correct official title for Princess Diana.

Despite of the fact, there is still exceptions which the Dutchess of Gloucester was named Princess Alice later to reward her for years of loyal service. Nevertheless, some pressure should be put on Prince William to not to change the system. But in the end, the final decision is up to the Queen.

  1. Kristy,

Excellent summary - well done! It's sensibly sorted into paragraphs with all the important information clearly conveyed.

Small thing - the correct phrase is 'Despite this' or 'Despite this fact'. You could have used 'However' here instead.

    See you in class!
    Emma
